Our Goal

Through consensus building among community stakeholders, SBRWA works toward a vision of the southern Bronx River watershed that includes a healthy environment, a prolific economy and a community that reaps the benefits of the river as a rich natural and recreational resource.

Where We are Today

In December 2013, the City of New York issued its final report for the TIGER Sheridan Expressway-Hunts Point Land Use and Transportation Study (TIGER Study). A diagrammatic representation of the main recommendations for transforming the area contained in the TIGER Study final report can be seen in the adjacent image.

Many of the recommendations are directly related to elements of the Original Community Plan. Since 2013, the SBRWA has been working with City and State agencies and City and State elected officials to implement these recommendations with ongoing input from the community.

Many of the principles inherent to the community plan evolved from a set of visioning sessions that took place throughout the winter and spring of 2006 and resulted in five comprehensive Draft Documents describing an inspiring future for the Sheridan Lands. Read more about the Sheridan Lands/Vision Sessions and the Environmental Impact Study which, prior to be rescinded, set the stage for the evolution of the TIGER Study, referenced above.

Milestones

April 25, 2017: This week, SBRWA penned a response to a recent Crain's New York's editorial "Tear down an expressway to build up a community." SBRWA's noted that although the Governor’s focus on converting the Sheridan Expressway to a community-friend boulevard is an important next step in the ongoing Sheridan conversion process, the final design must result from extensive community input and reflect the Community Vision’s goals. March 30, 2017: Today, the New York Times Editorial Board weighed in on Governor Cuomo's recent proposal for the Sheridan Corridor. The Editorial Board cited SBRWA's work and included the following quote from SBRWA member Pratt Center's Elena Conte, "If Governor Cuomo wants credit for undoing the legacy of Robert Moses in the South Bronx, he will do that not just by making physical changes, but also by listening to a community that Moses pointedly ignored." March 20, 2017: On March 19, 2017, Governor Cuomo announced a $1.7 billion investment in Sheridan Expressway Corridor that will include converting the Sheridan Expressway to a boulevard and direct access for commercial traffic into the Hunts Point Peninsula.
