General
- The Sheridan Expressway-Hunts Point Land Use and Transportation Study (SEHP) was a two-year intensive, interdisciplinary study of the neighborhoods and infrastructure surrounding the Sheridan Expressway, funded by a grant from USDOT. View it here.
- SBRWA has put together a series of maps that breakdown the neighborhoods that surround the Sheridan (Crotona Park East, Longwood, Bronx River, etc.) by age, income, race, land use, services, and mobility.
- Get acquainted with the current state of the Sheridan and the area that surrounds it. Make sure to note the near absence of cars on the Sheridan, as well as the influence these major roads have on the area that surrounds them. Families live right next to these highways, which is dangerous to their safety and health. There is a better way to use the land the Sheridan is on and it's our Community Plan!
Smart Mobility Study
Between 2004-2006, SBRWA put a great deal of time and energy into working with the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) through the formal stakeholder process it was conducting for its Bruckner-Sheridan Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The “Best Practices Model” used by NYSDOT was intended to predict traffic flow throughout the NYC region for the year 2030, however, it included a coding error that exaggerated traffic levels and also focused solely on transportation efficiency.
At the June 2006 stakeholder meeting held by the NYSDOT, the model’s flaws became even more apparent to the Alliance. It was decided that a technical consultant would be hired to help SBRWA analyze this data in more detail and to see what were the effects of leaving the Sheridan vs. demapping it. The consultant hired, Smart Mobility, was chosen due to its exceptional experience working with both community-based and national environmental groups.
